Valencia Basket, a growing team in Copa de la Reina

01/03/2021

The week of the Copa de la Reina València 2021 has arrived. Eight teams will meet at the Fonteta from March 4 to 7 to seek the first title of this year. Valencia Basket debuts as host in an LF Endesa competition. It will do so in its third participation, in its third season in the highest category of Spanish basketball and, moreover, in an upward trend. The Taronja team has demonstrated in its two previous participations the evolution of the project, which hopes to continue growing in this third edition.

In the season of promotion to LF Endesa 2018-19, Valencia Basket managed to debut in the competition by qualifying for the Copa de la Reina in Vitoria after the first round of the league, in which it had finished fifth as the first unseeded team. The Taronja team crossed in the quarterfinals with Spar Girona in a game in which they competed until the end and lost by only 3 points against one of the 'giants' of LF Endesa (49-52).

A year later, Rubén Burgos' team went one step further. Not only did it repeat its qualification for the Copa de la Reina in Salamanca, but it also did so as a top seed in third position. Valencia Basket got its first victory in the national tournament beating Ciudad de La Laguna in the quarterfinals (69-54). In this way, the taronja team advanced to its first cup semifinals where it faced Spar Girona. The Catalan team gave no option (77-60), but Valencia Basket had already managed to improve its performance compared to the debut season.

In this edition, the taronja team has qualified as second and will try to take another step forward in their participation. In the quarterfinals, Rubén Burgos' team will face the Basque IDK Euskotren, who qualified as seventh although they are now in eleventh position in the table. In a hypothetical semifinals, Valencia Basket would face Ciudad de La Laguna or Lointek Gernika, while watching out of the corner of its eye what happens on the other side of the table with Perfumerías Avenida and Spar Girona. The great challenge is to play the first final in the history of the Club's women's team, taking advantage of an ideal scenario such as La Fonteta.
