Jones & Ojeleye: the best joint performance of the decade

08/04/2024

Valencia Basket men's team won yesterday against Baskonia, keeping it engaged in the race for the best possible position in the Playoffs. With two wins and the tie-breaker won against the team that currently makes the cut to play the second round and one win away, and with the tie-breaker won by 2-0, with the current fourth-placed team. With several direct duels against rivals involved in this fight on the horizon, the Taronja team has its future in the national competition in its own hands in one of the toughest battles in recent history to make the Playoffs.

With the 17 wins that the taronja squad already has in acb, equaling its record from last year with six games still to play, it has been enough to play in the qualifying rounds for the title in the previous three campaigns of the Endesa League in which a regular season of 34 games ended. Although the equality at the top of the classification raises the question of whether it will be necessary to get closer to the 20 victories of the 1997-98 season, which represented the highest number of wins that an eighth-placed team has needed to play the acb Playoffs with this format of competition.

Jones and Ojeleye led the win

To ensure the win against the Vitorian team, more than nine years later two Valencia Basket players finished the game with a rating of 30+ index. Chris Jones and Semi Ojeleye combined to score 52 points (a little less than half of the team's score) and credit 67 credits (54.4% of the team's rating). A couple's performance that had not been seen in national competition in La Fonteta since 2015 and that had not been used to win an ACB game for just under 18 years. With yesterday, two Valencia Basket players have finished with a rating of 30+ in the same Endesa League game on up to seven occasions in the 21st century.
