Throwback Eurocup 2010: the beginning of a new era

04/04/2019

After seven seasons away from the gold medal games in European competitions, Valencia Basket returned to a final in the 2009-10 season. In the final, the same rival who will fight for the European title next Tuesday before our team, ALBA Berlin, was waiting for our team. And the final game still remains the biggest defensive exercise to win the title in this competition. Valencia Basket took off in the second quarter, left the Germans in 22 points at halftime and 44 points at the end so that their difference did not stop growing to stop the final score in a solvent win by 23 points of advantage (44-67).

The Australian Matt Nielsen was chosen MVP of the finals as spiritual leader of a roster in which that night they formed in Vitoria the following twelve players: Kosta Perovic, Víctor Claver, José Simeón, Serhiy Lishchuk, Marko Marinovic, Iván García, Rafa Martínez, Florent Pietrus, Nando de Colo, Tornike Shengelia, Thomas Kelati and the aforementioned Nielsen, led from the bench by Neven Spahija. The young Bozhidar Avramov, Hector Piquer and Giorgi Sharabidze also contributed to the second continental title ending up in our showcases.

One of the protagonists that raised that trophy, French international power forward Florent Pietrus, remembers that "it was a very special title for me. I remember that we were about to be eliminated, so I know what it costs to win a title. And above all win it with your teammates. So I wish you good luck and go for it!. And never forget it, tots de taronja"
